Description

Belonging to the willow family, the poplar is closely related to willows and aspens. This is a tall and narrow tree commonly seen on old estates, along roads as remnants of former avenues, near water bodies as ornamentals, and in parks. It is used for reforestation and originates from Western and Central Europe, while in regions like Argentina, North America, and South Africa it is considered an invasive species and ecological weed. Due to its elegant form, Poplars can be used to create green walls over 30 meters high, serving as effective windbreaks. This long-lived tree can often reach 200–300 years of age.

Characteristics

  • The tree has a narrow crown while maintaining a straight trunk with basal shoots.
  • Although it can grow very tall, the root system varies and can be either shallow or deep depending on the soil type.
  • The bark is very sensitive, thin, and prone to damage.
  • It is a deciduous tree whose leaves turn yellow in autumn and then fall. Leaves are elongated, diamond-shaped with rounded tips, and light green on the underside, typically 4–8 cm in length and width. Leaf stalks are thin and flat.
  • Flowering occurs in early spring before the leaves fully emerge. Initial flowering may happen in winter, but generally first blooms appear between 4–10 years of age, typically around 6 years.
  • This fast-growing species averages about 2 m of growth per year, with a maximum crown diameter of 2–3 m.
  • Although tolerant of all soil types, it grows best on nutrient-rich calcareous soils with an alkaline pH.
  • Suitable for planting in regions with abundant rainfall, with optimal precipitation ranging from 38–140 cm annually.

Resistance

Adapted to a wide range of temperatures, the tree tolerates both high and low temperatures, from 30°C down to approximately -20°C. It also withstands wet soils as well as dry conditions, particularly during drought periods.

Planting fruit seedlings

Planting is done from late October to mid-April, avoiding periods of frost and drought.

Trim the roots, then the branches into 3 to 4 rings. At the beginning of March, cut the seedlings to a height of 80 - 120 cm.

Before planting, soak the plant in water for at least 2 - 3 hours.

Dig a hole, in the previously prepared soil, measuring 60 x 60 x 50 cm for the soil (40 x 40 x 40 cm) so that the roots and part of the stem are well placed, taking care that the grafting point is outside the soil.

Place the plant in the hole and cover it with dry soil, gently press it down so that it gets well between the roots.

Fertilizer and seedling roots must not be in direct contact.

Pour with 20-30 liters of water. During periods of drought in the first year of planting, it is necessary to water young seedlings more often.

Containerized seedlings can be planted throughout the year.

*Applies to bare root seedlings.
